Drop by and learn more about our Online Violence Alert and Response System dashboard for monitoring digital attacks in real time.
Editors, journalists, and those with lived experiences of online violence (including, but not limited to cyberharassment, stalking, death threats, doxxing, etc.) are welcome to visit our table at the Bar Bellavista on Saturday 12 April, to find out the latest about an Online Violence Alert and Response System we have been developing in partnership with the University of Sheffield and international newsrooms and expert responders since 2021. Our abuse monitoring dashboard uses Natural Language Processing and AI tools to detect, analyse, monitor, and report online abuse and threats targeting journalists, especially women and those exposed at the intersection of other identities such as race, secual orientation and religious belief.
Since 2024, we have been monitoring abuse towards journalists working at 5 news organisations - in Australia, the Philippines, South Africa, and the U.S. - as part of a formal trial of our System. This research-informed System is built on the foundation of human-rights-by-design principles and it embeds indicators for online violence escalation which trigger alerts to responders. You can see some of the outputs from the research underpinning our system in our Big Data Case Studies focused on women journalists. We are now expanding this work to cover women political actors and human rights defenders.
As we head towards broader distribution of our tools, we need your feedback to help make them more user friendly and effective. How might you might use it? How could it be adapted to different contexts?
Venue: Bar Bellavista, Hotel Brufani, Piazza Italia 12, Perugia.
