The panel will explore the threats that women journalists face out in the field by looking at real-life cases that the Coalition For Women in Journalism (CFWIJ) has worked on. The discussion will take a deeper look at the different safety mechanisms women journalists deploy in response to the risks and dangers they face.
The CFWIJ has been documenting incidents of violence against women journalists working during the coverage of protests. The year 2019 was particularly challenging for journalists worldwide, with protests erupting from Chile to Hong Kong, Lebanon, Iran and Pakistan. CFWIJ data shows that attacks and impediments in the field were the second most documented problem that women journalists faced during the year. The attacks ranged from having equipment confiscated or damaged to physical assault.
