Regulation of the net has brought a series of unintended consequences affecting freedom of expression, the business of news organizations, and they power of platforms (giving them more). Is there an alternative path? Former U.S. Federal Communications Commission commissioner Susan Ness convened a Transatlantic Working Group on Content Moderation and Freedom of Expression to explore the goals of net regulation and new ways to reach them. Here she and a member of the working group will discuss ideas they addressed -- before public release -- including a proposal to establish national internet courts to bring due process and transparency to decisions about content takedowns. They will be questioned by James Ball, author of the upcoming book The System: Who Owns the Internet, and How It Owns Us, and the audience.
