There’s much talk these days in the U.S. about the state of democracy and local news. Research shows that where local news is weaker, corruption is stronger and polarization deeper. Local news isn’t incidental to democracy; it’s essential. Here, two longtime leaders of efforts to rebuild local journalism in the U.S. will discuss how we might strengthen local newsrooms and the communities they serve.

This session will take as its starting point the 20 March 2025 article by Richard Gingras entitled The evolution of media and democracy. How did we get here. How might we go forward
