Australia’s path-breaking 2021 legislation, which got Google and Meta to pay more than 300 million dollars to media outlets, is being watched by countries around the world that want to emulate it. However, getting different groups to agree that such a fund should exist is only the beginning. Other questions that need to be resolved include: how to guarantee that the funds are spent on journalism, that the processes are transparent and accountable and that the money doesn’t only benefit large, established organizations while excluding smaller, newer ones. This panel will look at successes and shortcomings from the Australia, Brazil, the US and Canada.
