Sometimes the journalism world can move quickly after all. In just a couple of short years, an idea that took flight in Sierra Leone, a standalone independent journalism fund that is designed, governed and run locally, is now mirrored in Armenia, Brazil, South Africa, the Philippines, Colombia, the Middle East (SWANA), and a growing number of other countries.
What do these fledgling journalism funds look like, how do they work, and what problems are they designed to solve? How do they bridge the public interest and private sectors? How are they raising funds, how are they protecting their funds’ independence from the sources of financing, and what are their hopes for sustainability? And if you want to set up a fund like this in your region, country or city, who you gonna call?
Four people involved in designing and launching such funds around the world will discuss these questions and more.
