Janine Warner is co-founder and executive director of SembraMedia, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering independent digital media leaders. An award-winning journalist, author, and digital media entrepreneur, Janine co-founded SembraMedia in 2015 with Mijal Iastrebner, a journalism entrepreneur from Argentina. SembraMedia conducts research and provides business and technical training, market intelligence, networking opportunities, consulting, and financial support, primarily in Latin America, Spain and the U.S market. SembraMedia also leads Project Oasis, a global research project which includes partners from around the world.

Janine was a Knight Fellow for the International Center of Journalists from October 2016 to April 2022. Her academic experience includes working as an adjunct professor at the University of Southern California and the University of Miami. She has also been a guest-lecturer at more than 30 other universities in the U.S., Europe and Latin America. And she's taught massive open online courses (MOOCs) for the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas at the University of Texas.

Between 1997 and 2014, Janine wrote or co-authored 25 books about the Internet, including Web Sites For Dummies and Social Media Design For Dummies. She studied journalism and Spanish at the University of Massachusetts and worked for several years at newspapers in California and Florida. Her first media startup was a bilingual newspaper published in Spanish and English in Northern California. From 1998 to 2000, she was director of Internet operations for The Miami Herald. She left that role to become director of Latin American Operations for CNET Networks. Janine's first language is English, she speaks Spanish fluently, is conversational in Portuguese, and plays well with translators.
